The location of the entrance to the Breitachklamm (only german) is not far from Tiefenbach. A unique miracle of nature!

“There the water of the Breitach boils, booms and whooshes” through the flume with nearly 100 meter high, vertical and overhanging walls. The water rushes over the high shelfs, bubbles through the deep flume and sprays into fine drops in which the light illuminates. Some of the gloomy walls of the flume have never seen the sun. The dark green moss and the delicate fern love the humidity and some spruces are growing on the shelfs.

Since 1905 the Breitachklamm has been made available as a trail. Encouraged by their reverend Johannes Schiebel was it a remarkable undertaking for the Tiefenbach citizen to build a trail where you can walk on.

Except during the snowmelt and in the late autumn you can walk on the trail all-the-year. For those who have been in the flume in the summer should see it in the winter. Huge icicles give you the feeling that you are in an ice palace.

Whether with the horse carriage, the horse sleigh, the cross-country ski or afoot. In every valley do you find an alpine tavern.

Einödsbach (the most southern village of Germany), 11 km from Oberstdorf located in the Stillachvalley and to be reached through Birgsau. The first mention of the chapel “St. Katharina” was in 1695 in the priest report of Einödsbach.

Gerstruben, 6 km from Oberstdorf is a mountain village, which is under monument conservation. Gerstruben consist of five houses, one chapel the “Marienkapelle” from the 17th century and a historical sawmill.

Spielmannsau, 7 km from Oberstdorf, located in the pictorial Trettachvalley, is part of Bavaria since 1844. Before that it belonged to Austria. Located in Spilmannsau is among other sings the chapel “Christi Geburt” – nativity of Christi, which was first mentioned in 1695. The Oyvalley, 7 km from Oberstdorf can be reached through a highs trail. All mentioned valleys are the starting point for many hikes.

The Rohrmoostal - Rohrmoosvalley located in the district of Tiefenbach is in the possession of the prince of Waldburg-Wolfegg since 1500. It comprises 15.999 sqm of wood and alp area. Located in this valley is the chapel “St.Anna” (wooden building from the late renaissance) with it’s folksy frescos. The winged altar is from the year 1568.

You can find well-tended trails in the summer and terrific cross-country ski conditions in the winter. Here you can also find a tavern. The entrance to the world-famous Breitachflume can be found here. This unique nature monument attracts 100.000 visitors annually. The gap of the Breitach (mountain stream) through a massive Rock demonstrates the history of the creation in overwhelming quantity and beauty. A visit is worth in every season and weather condition.

The streams Breitach, Stillach and Trettach unite at the Iller origin, which is located between Oberstdorf and Langenwang. The Iller continuous through Sonthofen and Kempten until it unites with the Donau in Ulm. Above the Iller between Fischen and the district Schöllang you can find the pictorial castle of Schöllang.

From Schöllang back to Oberstdorf leads the trail through two of the districts of Oberstdorf Reichenbach and Rubi, which are located submontane to the Rubihorn.

In Reichenbach, located at a mountain side you can find a little church, which contains a high altar from the late Gothic. Likewise in Reichenbach is the chapel “St. Jacob”. The altar is in the late Gothic-style and comprises the mother of Christ made by Ivo Stringel and the sand figures from the master of the Imberg Altar are in particular worth to be mentioned.

You can find a very beautifully daedaled altar in the chapel "St. Anna" in Rubi. The altar was made by Melchior Eberhard from Handling and the altarpiece from Michael Herz from Immenstadt. The church aficionados have to see the Lorettochapel. It is a place of pilgrimage. The first reactivation of the pilgrimage after a break of 200 years took place through a group from the Lechtal in Tirol in 1993. The trail took the group through the Mädelejoch and Spielmannsau. Loretto is a much-frequented Christian place, because of the three single chapels, the Appachchapel (1493), the Marienchapel (1657) and the Josefschapel (1671).

More chapels are located in the district Jauchen (first mentioning in 1695), the district Kornau (“St. Fabian” and “St. Sebastian” which has a high altar from the 1720), in the village in the Weststraße (Pestchapel 1634/35, build because of the 800 victims of the pest), the Seelenchapel behind the catholic church at marketplace (build in 1524 with frescos from the 16th century) and the Klausen chapel from the 16th century which is located at the entrance of the village.

The latest low-platform busses equipped with the latest-generation of electric and hybrid driving techniques, in addition to the fuel cell driven bus which is to be used as from the summer of 1998 for the first time ever in the world, just go to show that you don’t have to go without mobility for the sake of the environment. That also goes for the energy supply - 40% of the electric current comes from the municipality’s own hydroelectric power station, „Warmatsgund“ and Bavaria’s largest communal solar plant. The use of regenerative energy has been incorporated into the traffic policy of Oberstdorf’s environmental scheme. The first non-pollutant energy circulation has been concluded. With its pace-setting ecological conceptions, Oberstdorf heads the list as far as their compliance with the ... „local agenda 21“ is concerned. All these points go to show that it is even possible to become a pioneer by way of the motto „Back to nature“.

All-embracing ...

Protecting the environment is always a worthwhile issue. At Oberstdorf, all your senses benefit from it. The cleanness of the air is ranked first-class and even the taps provide refreshment at a mineral water quality with such a low sodium content that it is even suitable for preparing baby food.
The sun shines abundantly on the magnificent landscape and the soul also profits from the multifarious experiences made in such natural surroundings. Other factors are the varied climate levels that are naturally salubrious - from the mild climate down in the valley to the stimulating climate up in the mountains. Could there be any better reasons for doing good to your body and soul?

The jagged Trettach valley, for instance, with its impressive mountains, the untamed Oy valley or the peaceful Stillach valley, to mention just three of them. In the midst of them all lies Oberstdorf. Not only right in the heart of nature but also in one of the sunniest regions in Bavaria.

All-time

Any time is the right time to fortify your health. However, the autumn is especially recommendable given that there is seldom fog and plenty of sunshine. Not only is the circulation preserved particularly well then but also mother nature shows herself at her colourful best at this time of the year. A contemplative walk in a multicoloured autumn forest can do wonders. Especially when the forest happens to be located in the nearby mountains, for the oxygen intake in the blood is increased through physical exercise at altitudes of over 1000 m. So just take a deep breath and recharge your batteries! Whether you are on a health cure or „only“ on a wholesome holiday, whether you are on your own or accompanied by the whole family, our wide recreation programme is offered the whole year round and taking care of your health is an issue that should never be put out of season, anyway.

The main section deals with Alpine farming and normal agriculture. It is no coincidence that there is a peep-hole leading from the bedroom chamber to the stable, for alongside the carefully preserved game, the livestock was one’s base of living for which it was worth taking every effort.

It is no coincidence that there is a peep-hole leading from the bedroom chamber to the stable, for alongside the carefully preserved game, the livestock was one’s base of living for which it was worth taking every effort.

The impressively carved butter moulds, the richly embroidered mountain infantrymen’s garments, the „historical period costumes“ and even the touching beauty of the miracle-working image in the Loretto chapels demonstrate that the appreciation of art was never lost, nevertheless.

Then as now

Tradition is not only to be found when you step inside the museum. You can discover it everywhere - at religious festivals which, as in the past, continue to determine the annual routine; in the little chapels you pass along the wayside, in the living art of handicrafts and, last but not least, in the agriculture, thanks to which tradition and originality still remain unaffected. That’s yet another reason why our guests love Oberstdorf and its natives.

The lungs stretch out and the soul draws a deep breath in the clear, dry air. The priest, Sebastian Kneipp had already acquired this knowledge when he claimed that a winter cure replaced two summer cures. Somehow it’s far easier to forget the everyday hustle and bustle. Everything seems to slow down, quieten down, becomes more intimate. And still - or perhaps just because of that - the day is not any emptier.A walk through the snow to the magical „crystal palace“ of the Breitachklamm will bring blood to your cheeks or a ride on a horse-drawn slay will fill your heart with gratitude for so much overwhelming beauty. After an hour of ice skating, a round of curling or a toboggan ride you will find a drink of punch particularly tasty. Seldom do you sleep better than after a day out in the fresh winter air. And seldom do you get more enjoyment out of doing something that promotes your health.

Discover how the bizarre winter landscape suddenly makes old myths and legends come alive as you ride through a dazzling white winter world or stroll through the icicle-hung Breitachklamm

Whether „the water doctor“ or „the herb priest“, many an affectionate nickname was attributed to Sebastian Kneipp, but none of them were just.

Indeed, it was this great man who developed a comprehensive health cure to replace several individual treatments, proceeding on the assumption that the human being is, in fact, more than just an addition of symptoms and that each illness has more than one cause. It was he who understood that civilization not only alienates us from nature but, above all, from our very own nature. He taught us that we must learn to listen to our body first and interpret the signals transmitted by it.

In this sense, the Kneipp cure is also a health doctrine built upon the five pillars which, according to Kneipp, determine our well-being. The gentle, reliable and comprehensive effect which renders a Kneipp cure appropriate for the treatment of almost all illnesses just proves how right he was. Oberstdorf is a prime example as to how many-sided a Kneipp cure can be. You will find Kneipp tread baths and arm basins dotted along numerous footpaths. 9 hotels offer Kneipp cures, there are several sanatoriums and medicinal baths, and over 30 guesthouses and restaurants offer diets according to Kneipp.

The rhythmic alternation of drink and dry days along with the special low-stimulus and low-fat diet lead to a purification process which covers the whole human being.

Not only has Schroth’s treatment proved successful in permanently relieving or healing metabolic diseases such as hypercholesterolinaemia, hypertonia, diabetes mellitus and gout, but also skin diseases, rheumatism, arthrosis, migraines and female disorders.
