During the winter every skier gets his money worth, no matter which degree of difficulty he expects.

From the valley station (828m) the cable car goes through two transfer stations up to the Nebelhorn summit (2.224m). Up there three chairlifts take the skier to the ski-slope. Depending on the snow cover the ski run to the valley is trouble-free possible.
In the summer time the hiker finds a signposted path network, amongst others a geological nature trail.

Here is the starting point of the “Hinderlanger Klettersteig” – Hinderlanger fixed rope route, which should be used by only experienced climbers.

The main section deals with Alpine farming and normal agriculture. It is no coincidence that there is a peep-hole leading from the bedroom chamber to the stable, for alongside the carefully preserved game, the livestock was one’s base of living for which it was worth taking every effort.

It is no coincidence that there is a peep-hole leading from the bedroom chamber to the stable, for alongside the carefully preserved game, the livestock was one’s base of living for which it was worth taking every effort.

The impressively carved butter moulds, the richly embroidered mountain infantrymen’s garments, the „historical period costumes“ and even the touching beauty of the miracle-working image in the Loretto chapels demonstrate that the appreciation of art was never lost, nevertheless.

Then as now

Tradition is not only to be found when you step inside the museum. You can discover it everywhere - at religious festivals which, as in the past, continue to determine the annual routine; in the little chapels you pass along the wayside, in the living art of handicrafts and, last but not least, in the agriculture, thanks to which tradition and originality still remain unaffected. That’s yet another reason why our guests love Oberstdorf and its natives.

Feel like taking a short trip somewhere? Then how about taking your bike to the Rohrmoos valley. The chapel of St. Anna’s may look inconspicuous from the outside but the painting dating back to the late 16th century at the interior is unique to the Bavarian Alps.

The depiction of the Last Judgement is unusual and contains many impressive details. A visit to the Loretto chapels on the southern outskirts is an absolute must, where all art-lovers are fascinated by the baroque sculptures and miracle-working image. The Appach chapel shows relics of Gothic frescoes and the Joseph’s chapel contains the works of local masters such as the famous „Palm Donkey“ dating back to 1729.

Those with more time on their hands should definitely make a point of visiting the Stuibenfall while they’re at it! Gerstruben, the tiny settlement which is classified completely as a historical monument, provides very interesting information about everyday life in the mountains.

One chapel, four farmsteads dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, a dairy and a sawmill have all been restored with loving care. Then again, you mustn’t forget to stop at the Christlessee or the Jauchen chapel, or .... well, we could go on and on! Perhaps, on second thoughts, you’re better off discovering Oberstdorf’s places of paradise for yourself, after all!

The Trettachspitze and Mädelegable tower over Einödsbach, Germany’s southernmost settlement and it’s worth taking a glimpse through the chapel door, or the „Nadelöhrtürle“, to bring good luck!
