Whether „the water doctor“ or „the herb priest“, many an affectionate nickname was attributed to Sebastian Kneipp, but none of them were just.

Whether „the water doctor“ or „the herb priest“, many an affectionate nickname was attributed to Sebastian Kneipp, but none of them were just.

Indeed, it was this great man who developed a comprehensive health cure to replace several individual treatments, proceeding on the assumption that the human being is, in fact, more than just an addition of symptoms and that each illness has more than one cause. It was he who understood that civilization not only alienates us from nature but, above all, from our very own nature. He taught us that we must learn to listen to our body first and interpret the signals transmitted by it.

In this sense, the Kneipp cure is also a health doctrine built upon the five pillars which, according to Kneipp, determine our well-being. The gentle, reliable and comprehensive effect which renders a Kneipp cure appropriate for the treatment of almost all illnesses just proves how right he was. Oberstdorf is a prime example as to how many-sided a Kneipp cure can be. You will find Kneipp tread baths and arm basins dotted along numerous footpaths. 9 hotels offer Kneipp cures, there are several sanatoriums and medicinal baths, and over 30 guesthouses and restaurants offer diets according to Kneipp.

The rhythmic alternation of drink and dry days along with the special low-stimulus and low-fat diet lead to a purification process which covers the whole human being.

Not only has Schroth’s treatment proved successful in permanently relieving or healing metabolic diseases such as hypercholesterolinaemia, hypertonia, diabetes mellitus and gout, but also skin diseases, rheumatism, arthrosis, migraines and female disorders.

According to the time of year, the younger generation can do all sorts of things under the surveillance of our children’s hostesses. Together, they can go pony riding, visit a farm, go ice skating, take an evening walk holding lanterns or watch the wildlife at the bog lake. What else can they do?

They can learn how to make biscuits from a real confectioner, watch how to make baskets, practise cooking, visit the weather station or fire brigade, watch what goes on inside a police station, build snowmen ... create things, play crazy golf, go to the bathing festival, dance at the kids’ discotheque.

The only thing they can’t do, is be bored! So there you are, kids, how about you joining in! You’ll be taken very good care of and, in the meantime, the grown-ups can do something else, if they want to. They are sure to think of something

There are the Oberstdorf Easter games (some hosts charge nothing for children up to 14 years), special activities with our children’s ski schools, children’s gym festivals, Sunday school, a library where the children can borrow books and family games and, of course, most restaurants offer children’s dishes at a cheaper price. So, as you can see, we are fully prepared for families.

Holidays „on the farm“ are very popular among both children and grown-ups and it’s a good way of getting to know the country and its natives, the flowers and the animals. A family holiday at Oberstdorf is simply great fun!

Many a great naturopath was of humble, rural origin. Indeed, Kneipp was the son of a poor Allgäu weaver and treated himself with water out of mere dispair.

Many a great naturopath was of humble, rural origin. Indeed, Kneipp was the son of a poor Allgäu weaver and treated himself with water out of mere dispair.

Schroth was a farmer and drew his knowledge from the natural self-healing behaviour of animals. Perhaps it was because people valued the force of nature more where it was felt most. This theory certainly applies to Oberstdorf.

Back in the 15th century the Earls of Montfort and Rothenfels cured themselves in the sulphur bath at Tiefenbach. Nowadays, guests prefer to take advantage of the various modern health equipment, whereby the term „modern“ seems rather odd considering „old“ healing methods such as hay packs, mud baths, mud packs and mud kneading packs are applied.

Physiotherapy, massages, saunas, cosmetic salons and work-out studios are just as available as doctors specialized in cures, medical specialists, general practitioners, nonmedical practitioners, psychologists, a dialytic institution, a centre for comprehensive medicine, a centre for biological therapies and an institution for breathing therapy. Vegetarian, biological, differentiated and bland food dishes are included on most menu cards.

The countryside all around you provides a natural pharmacy for your health and well-being. It is not without reason that Oberstdorf is a recognized health resort with a salubrious climate and that more and more people are coming here to become „whole“ again in the true sense of the word, that is, to bring their body and soul into harmony, to rearrange their targets in life, or simply to relax conscious in a conscious way.

There’s a true Eldorado waiting here for tennis cracks. The tennis park offering both indoor and outdoor courts is second to none!

There’s a true Eldorado waiting here for tennis cracks. If you feel like testing how fit you are, then try the fitness trail at Reichenbach or Tiefenbach or the one starting at Renksteg that passes right along the Stillach river. Table tennis, volleyball, fishing, horse-riding, cycling, summer skating, archery, crazy golf, shooting or skittles all provide great entertainment for the whole family. You don’t always have to go breaking records! Some people’s hearts beat faster when they see a rare flower, others prefer to train their inner calm by watching the clouds pass by. Lastly, it is also very important to keep your mind fit, and you can do that by taking part in a game of garden chess or at the free library in the kurhaus.

On the water, in the air or on the ground: the scope of possibilities is so varied that you’re bound to find the discipline that suits you best.
This must be the only place in the world where you can find health treatment and sauna areas in 300 year old farmsteads, breakers under a glass roof (which enables you to sunbathe even in the winter) and precious stones from Hildegard von Bingen’s doctrine of salvation. Where? In the phenomenal crystal health and recreational baths, of course!
Take a quiet dip into the softer waves of the Freibergsee. This bathing lake is one of the warmest of the high mountain region.

Ski jumping in August? Why, certainly! During the summer mat-jumping season you can marvel at the spectacular high-altitude jumps even when the temperatures are up in their eighties! On certain evenings you can even watch the jumping by floodlight - and that’s certainly something to tell the folks back home!

Both at Oberstdorf and Reichenbach: as many as two mud baths within a stone’s throw invite you to swim and relax.
You will find the Gebrgoibe golf course very „striking“, considering it has one of the most scenic greens in the whole of Germany.

Saddle up at the St. Georg riding stables at Tiefenbach where you will find an indoor riding arena and a large outdoor arena which is heated in the winter. Or keep yourself on the trot and try the pony-riding at Oberstdorf or Tiefenbach.
